Friends of Lopez Island Pool (FLIP) is becoming the Lopez Swim Center

Our mission is to bring greater health, water safety, and community to all the people of San Juan County by building a sustainable Swim Center.

Nearly 40 volunteers, professionals in their respective fields, contribute their expertise and energy to FLIP’s many committees and advisorships.

Bill, FLIP’s former board president, continues to serve as an essential leader, helping guide the construction project to opening day and beyond.

Lance is passionate about creating safe, fun, and welcoming spaces for everyone—whether you’re diving in for the first time or perfecting your backstroke. Outside of the pool, Lance is an avid artist who loves to draw and paint—he’s rarely without one of his many sketchbooks, always ready to capture a moment or doodle a new idea.

Mike North | Board President
manorth1250@outlook.com

Mike brings his decades of experience in sales and sales management expertise to share with the board. A full-time Lopezian, he also served on the board of the Lopez Yacht Club for five years.

“My wife Juli and I began exploring the islands in our kayaks every summer and we continued this tradition when our boys were old enough to swim and to paddle. Every child [here] needs to know how to swim and deserves the opportunity to learn. That is just one of the important benefits this pool will provide.”

Melissa Bennett | Vice President
melissa.bennett@lopezislandpool.org

After growing up in Southern California, Melissa has spent much of her life in swimming pools and oceans. While she continues to pursue her career of over 20 years as a nurse anesthetist/nurse practitioner at the UW Medical Center, she and her family embrace all that life has to offer on Lopez Island, as full-time residents.

I am so excited to be part of Lopez Swim Center. I believe the pools offer a chance to engage all ages and all cultures of our vibrant community together around a love of water and fitness.”

Tom DiGiorgio | Board Treasurer
tom.digiorgio@lopezislandpool.org

Tom is a retired Delta Air Lines pilot, and the former president of DiGiorgio Asset Management LLC.

“Everyone living on an island should know how to swim; we need to provide an opportunity for islanders to learn and practice this life-saving skill.

Robin Bergstrom | Board Secretary
mackayeharbor@rockisland.com

Robin was a collegiate swimmer and a Lopez business owner for 33 years.

“We designed and installed the first solar-heated, computer-regulated, Myrtha-type pool on Lopez Island in 1983. This is the same type of pool FLIP plans for the Lopez community pool: economic to build AND maintain. I want to leave something of great benefit to Lopez, my home for more than 40 years.”

Lisa DiGiorgio | Board Member, Community Engagement Lead
lisa.digiorgio@lopezislandpool.org

Lisa spent more than 30 years working in public health with Seattle/King County and now serves on the San Juan County Board of Health.  Her commitment to community well-being is at the heart of her work with the Lopez Swim Center.

“I remember my mother saying that my four siblings and I must learn to swim well to be safe in the water. She didn’t want to worry about us. This is why I believe strongly that everyone–especially youth–must learn the life skill of swimming. The pool will be an incredible asset to this community, not only through swim lessons in partnership with the schools but in so many other ways…helping new moms and babies feel comfortable in the water, giving families another place to connect, supporting fitness and aqua therapy, and strengthening our sense of community. Meet me at the pool!

Brian Goff | Board Member, LISD Liaison
bgoff@lopezislandschool.org

Brian is currently a teacher at the Lopez Island Elementary School.

“I’ve been a strong swimmer since early childhood swim lessons. Being in the water was a constant, and swimming proficiency was tantamount to safety. As a Lopezian, fishing, sailing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, being on or in our cold salt water, safety is even more important. I’m a hearty believer that children need to be strong swimmers, if not for safety, for the sheer joy of moving well in the water.

Matt Newman | Board Member newmanm23@lopezislandpool.org

Matt’s 30-year career has been in recreation, athletics, and education, primarily in college settings. He currently serves as the Director of Recreation at the University of Washington in Seattle.

“We all know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for all ages; you add in the safety issue of island residents learning to swim and this project becomes imperative.”

Veronica Ramirez-Cervantes | Board Member
veronica@lopezislandpool.org

My motivation to be part of this project stems from my experience as a mother. When my children were young, sometimes I served as a chaperone on school field trips organized by Linda Barton, where I can saw the joy and enthusiasm that the pool was generating for the children. Back then, the Lopez Swim Center was just a dream for the kids, and I remember how they would imagine all the activities they might one day enjoy there. Now that this dream is almost a reality, I am motivated to contribute to this effort so that new generations may have a space filled with opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. As a member of the Hispanic community, I would also like foster greater inclusion and participation, so more families feel welcome to this important community project.
The pool will be more than a place to learn how to swim; it will also be a place of connection; a place to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Micki Ryan | Governance Chair
mickiryan@rockisland.com

Micki was a former nonprofit manager.

“I want everyone to have the opportunities I had to learn to save myself in deep water, to learn life-saving skills, enjoy competitive and synchronized swimming, to relax weary, damaged muscles in the therapy pool, and to enjoy the social interaction of a few women my age in a pool together. Come swim with me!

Amy Wynn | Board Member amy.wynn@lopezislandpool.org

Amy brings to the FLIP board 25 years of experience as an aquatic professional. She has a passion for training lifeguards, teaching and coaching swimming, and instructing aqua fitness classes.

She has felt like a mermaid out of water these past 5 years she has lived on Lopez and is looking forward to serving the board as best she can to make that day arrive when she can finally do a giant cannonball jump into the deep end!

Linda Barton | In memoriam

One of FLIP’s pivotal leaders, Linda believed that a pool was not simply a building—it was a promise. A promise of safety for our kids, of strength and rehabilitation for our seniors, of connection for families, and of joy for people of all ages. She carried this vision with extraordinary perseverance, even when progress felt slow or obstacles felt too large. Her leadership lit the path forward, and her optimism carried all of us along with her.

As we prepare to open the Lopez Swim Center, it is impossible not to feel Linda’s presence in every step.
